[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Amidst instability in the export front, the government and the trade industry will hold a Trade Day ceremony to reaffirm their commitment to becoming a strong export nation.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea International Trade Association announced on the 4th that they will hold the 59th Trade Day ceremony on the 5th at COEX in Gangnam-gu under the slogan "Challenge, Strong Trade Nation! Leap Forward, Republic of Korea!" and award the "Export Tower" to 1,780 companies, an increase of 207 companies compared to last year.

The Export Tower is awarded when a single corporation achieves a new record by surpassing a specific export performance threshold.

This year, Samsung Electronics will receive the $120 billion Export Tower for the first time. SK Hynix will receive the $30 billion Export Tower, and Amkor Technology Korea, SD Biosensor, and Hanwha Solutions will each receive the $2 billion Export Tower.

In the export merit category, Jeong Kyung-oh, CEO of Heesung PM Tech, and Choi Woo-gak, Chairman of Daesung Hi-Tech, will receive the Gold Tower Industrial Medal, while the Silver Tower Industrial Medal will be awarded to Lee Jang-yeol, CEO of Seoul Cable, and Kim Seon-gyu, CEO of Kumho Polychem. A total of 597 people will receive commendations and awards. The Chairman’s Commendation from the Trade Association will also be given to 80 individuals.

The government designated November 30, 1964, as the first Export Day to commemorate the historic achievement of the first $100 million in exports.

Since 1990, it was renamed "Trade Day," and in 2011, to celebrate reaching a trade volume of $1 trillion, the event date was moved to December 5.
