[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] LG Chem announced on the 4th that it has launched a high-performance plastic product (Bio-Circular balanced ABS) using plant-based bio raw materials, marking the start of its full-scale entry into the eco-friendly market.
ABS is a plastic with excellent heat resistance and impact resistance, and it is LG Chem's number one product in the global market share. It can be processed into desired shapes and various colors, making it a material used in a wide range of products including toys, home appliances, automobiles, and construction materials.
The newly launched eco-friendly high-performance plastic uses renewable bio raw materials and has obtained ISCC PLUS (global eco-friendly material certification). LG Chem is the first in Asia to sell eco-friendly products certified with 'ISCC PLUS' in the ABS sector.
Through conducting LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), which evaluates environmental impacts from raw material production to product shipment, LG Chem verified the carbon reduction effect, showing a significant decrease in carbon emissions compared to conventionally produced ABS.
The eco-friendly high-performance plastic, part of the 2050 net-zero initiative, was launched under LG Chem's integrated eco-friendly brand 'LETZero.'
This product was recently first supplied to Mattel, the largest toy manufacturer in North America focusing on eco-friendly product development. LG Chem plans to actively expand and lead the market related to eco-friendly high-performance plastics.
With the acceleration of ESG trends, demand for eco-friendly products applicable to everyday life is continuously increasing.
As part of its sustainability strategy, LG Chem has launched diapers and flooring using bio raw materials, and eco-friendly remote controls and set-top boxes using recycled plastics, focusing on carbon neutrality and resource circulation activities.
No Gukrae, head of the Petrochemical Business Division, stated, "We will lead the market with sustainable materials centered on eco-friendly products and provide end consumers with opportunities for valuable consumption that considers the environment."
