[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jung-wan] To solve the 'rat problem' that has lasted for over 300 years, New York City in the United States has announced a job opening for public officials specializing in catching rats.

According to foreign media such as The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 1st (local time), New York City recently posted an unusual job announcement seeking a 'Rat Czar (public official in charge of rats)'.

According to the announcement, suitable candidates for this position are "enthusiastic and somewhat bloodthirsty" New York citizens. The hired official will be responsible for controlling the city's rats.

The announcement states, "Do you have the ability to do the impossible? Do you have a tremendous passion for eliminating pests? If so, this is where you belong."

The rat official will receive an annual salary ranging from $120,000 (approximately 150 million KRW) up to $170,000 (approximately 220 million KRW).

The rat problem has persisted among New Yorkers since the 1700s. Rats are known to have traveled to Africa, America, Australia, and other places along with European colonial settlers in the 18th and 19th centuries. According to pest control company Orkin last October, the most rodent pest control operations were conducted in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C.

Although efforts to control rats have been ongoing, rats are still commonly found on sidewalks and in trash bins. The number of rats in the city that the New York City official will handle is estimated to be 2 million.
