[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] It has been confirmed that Police Commissioner Yoon Hee-geun requested severe disciplinary action against Chief Superintendent Ryu Sam-young, who led the nationwide police chiefs (chief superintendents) meeting opposing the establishment of the Police Bureau under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

According to the Police Agency on the 2nd, Commissioner Yoon recently demanded severe disciplinary action against Chief Superintendent Ryu at the Police Agency Central Disciplinary Committee. According to the Police Officer Disciplinary Regulations, there are six types of disciplinary actions: dismissal, removal, demotion, suspension, pay reduction, and reprimand. Among these, dismissal, removal, demotion, and suspension are considered severe disciplinary actions. It is not known which specific disciplinary action Commissioner Yoon requested.

The disciplinary committee for Chief Superintendent Ryu will be held at 1 p.m. on the 8th. In a phone interview with Asia Economy, Chief Superintendent Ryu said, "I wonder why this is happening," and described it as a "completely unexpected outcome." Previously, the Police Agency Citizen Inspection Committee recommended a minor disciplinary action against Chief Superintendent Ryu last September. At that time, the internal atmosphere within the police also largely favored a decision of exoneration for Chief Superintendent Ryu. The Police Agency Human Rights Committee also recommended halting any disadvantageous measures against the meeting attendees.

While serving as the Chief of Ulsan Jungbu Police Station, on July 23rd, Chief Superintendent Ryu led a nationwide police chiefs meeting attended by 54 chief superintendents opposing the Police Bureau, and was subsequently placed on standby at the Ulsan Police Agency Public Safety Department’s Police Planning, Information, and Equipment Division. At that time, Acting Police Commissioner Yoon reported that despite orders to disband, Chief Superintendent Ryu proactively proceeded with the meeting and referred the matter to disciplinary procedures.
