[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The Korea Arts & Culture Education Service announced on the 2nd that it will open a public recruitment for the artistic director who will oversee the Korean Pavilion exhibition at the 60th Venice Biennale Art Exhibition to be held in Venice, Italy in 2024.

The recruitment will be conducted over four weeks until the 30th. After submitting Korean and English application forms including exhibition plans through the National Culture and Arts Support System, the artistic director for the Korean Pavilion will be selected through the first document screening and the second presentation evaluation.

At the 59th Venice Biennale Art Exhibition, which ended on the 27th of last month, more than 800,000 people from around the world visited during the approximately seven-month exhibition period, marking the highest number of visitors in the 127-year history. This year's visitor count increased by 35% compared to 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Korean Pavilion also recorded the highest number of visitors since its establishment in 1995, with 566,000 visitors, an increase of 51.6% compared to 2019. On November 5th, 8,555 people visited in one day, setting a new record for the highest daily number of visitors.

The Venice Biennale traditionally holds art exhibitions in odd-numbered years and architecture exhibitions in even-numbered years, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 architecture exhibition was postponed, resulting in the art exhibition being held this year.

An official from the Arts Council stated, "We have significantly advanced the recruitment period for the artistic director to present a good exhibition that can continue the positive response from visitors this year," adding, "This reflects the art community's opinion that sufficient preparation time is necessary to present a good exhibition."
