[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] Tesla has announced a recall of approximately 435,000 vehicles, the largest scale this year in China, due to a malfunction in the rear lights, according to the Chinese government.

According to the announcement by the State Administration for Market Regulation on the 2nd, the recall targets include 142,277 Model 3 vehicles produced between December 27, 2020, and last month’s 7th, and 292,855 Model Y vehicles produced between January 1, last year, and last month’s 11th, all manufactured in China.

The State Administration for Market Regulation stated that the recalled vehicles have a software issue controlling the vehicle indicator lights, which may cause the rear lights not to turn on when switching from parking mode to driving mode, posing a risk of accidents.

Tesla said it can normalize the software of the recalled vehicles remotely via over-the-air (OTA) updates without requiring visits to service centers, and vehicles not eligible for this technology will be serviced free of charge at service centers. Previously, Tesla announced on the 19th that it would recall 321,000 vehicles in the United States due to the rear light malfunction issue.

This is Tesla’s sixth vehicle recall in China this year, bringing the cumulative number of recalled vehicles to 791,600. The most recent recall was announced on the 25th of last month, involving about 80,000 vehicles due to defective seatbelt installation (Model S and Model X) and software issues (Model 3). Notably, in April, 127,785 Model 3 vehicles were recalled due to a potential semiconductor component defect that could lead to collision accidents.
