"Corning's new product 'Gorilla Glass Victus2' survived being dropped from a height of 1 meter onto a concrete floor surface. It was confirmed that a competitor's aluminosilicate strengthened glass product broke even from heights of 0.5 meters or less."

Corning, a U.S.-based company specializing in smartphone display glass substrates, held an online press conference on the 1st to unveil its new product 'Gorilla Glass Victus2' and made this announcement. The company aims to have it installed in the latest flagship smartphone series of major manufacturers and plans to embed its product in key tablet PCs and wearable devices in the future. Among the flagship smartphones expected to feature Corning glass is Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S23 series, which is anticipated to be unveiled in February next year, drawing attention.

According to Corning, Victus2 is a product that maximizes the function of preventing damage when smartphones are dropped onto 'concrete,' a surface where phones are prone to breakage. Corning stated that the latest smartphones have become about 15% heavier and their screen sizes have increased by up to 10% compared to four years ago. The durability of cover glass has become more important. In the three major smartphone markets?China, India, and the U.S.?84% of consumers surveyed cited 'durability' as the most important purchasing consideration besides brand.

At the press conference, Corning also revealed a durability test demonstration video of the product. When the strengthened glass product was dropped onto '80-grit sandpaper,' which simulates a concrete floor, the product was shown vividly not breaking even from a height of 1 meter.

David Velasquez, Vice President and General Manager of Gorilla Glass, explained, "As reliance on clear and undamaged (smartphone) displays increases, excellent scratch resistance and drop performance are increasingly demanded. We asked Corning researchers to develop a glass composition with durability capable of withstanding drops from waist height onto surfaces rougher than asphalt, as well as to improve the performance of cover glass for larger and heavier devices."

Corning expects its glass to be installed in flagship phones of major manufacturers and released to the market within a few months. The Galaxy S23 series is mentioned as a major flagship phone brand expected to feature this company's glass. Gorilla Glass has been adopted by 45 major brands worldwide and installed in over 8 billion devices to date.

Kim Hyunwoo, Corning's Sales Director, said at the press conference, "We expect to see Gorilla Victus2 installed in flagship smartphones of major manufacturers within the next few months. We are currently negotiating with clients, so it is difficult to disclose the pricing, but personally, I expect it to be installed in more than 10 device models."
