[Asia Economy Military Specialist Reporter Yang Nak-gyu] A National Memorial Cemetery will be established in Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do. The plan is to create a site with a capacity of 20,000 graves by 2028.
On the 1st, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced that the site for the National Memorial Cemetery in the Gangwon region has been selected as Deokchon-ri, Gonggeun-myeon, Hoengseong-gun.
The Ministry explained that after conducting feasibility studies and operating a site selection evaluation team for seven candidate sites submitted by Hoengseong, Yanggu, and Yeongwol counties, this location was chosen. The National Memorial Cemetery in the Gangwon region will be developed with a total project cost of 43.3 billion KRW, accommodating 20,000 burial facilities.
The Ministry plans to complete all necessary procedures including basic planning, design, and permits from 2023 to 2025, begin construction in June 2026 for two years, and aims to open the cemetery in November 2028. The site will be developed in an eco-friendly manner, serving not only as a space to honor and remember the deceased but also as a place to experience history and relax in harmony with nature.
In preparation for the increasing burial demand due to the aging of national veterans, the Ministry is expanding the capacity of national cemeteries by establishing regional national cemeteries to improve burial capacity and accessibility for users. Currently, there are 12 national cemeteries, including the Memorial Cemeteries in Seoul and Daejeon, six National Memorial Cemeteries in Goesan, Yeongcheon, Imsil, Icheon, Sancheong, and Jeju, three democratic cemeteries for the April 19, March 15, and May 18 movements, and the Sinam Seonyeol Park.
