Contributing to Income Growth through Agricultural Development, Poverty Alleviation, and Hunger Relief in Developing Countries
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Gyeongsang National University held the "2022 International Agricultural Development Cooperation Symposium" at 1 p.m. on November 30th at the Nuri Hall of the Agricultural Life Sciences Building on the Gajwa Campus.
The Office of External Cooperation at Gyeongsang National University explained the background of holding the international symposium, stating, "Through this symposium, we aim to promote agricultural development in developing countries, thereby contributing to poverty eradication and hunger relief, as well as leading the industrialization of agriculture to create jobs and increase income."
The symposium was divided into two parts. In the first part, Gyeongsang National University held a seminar on the "Leading International Cooperation University Project" to be promoted with Bogor Agricultural University in Indonesia from April 2023, and the "Establishment of GNU Korean Language Education Center through the Establishment of Sejong Institute."
Gyeongsang National University plans to operate a "Smart Agriculture Expert Capacity Building Program" for seven years in cooperation with Bogor Agricultural University in Indonesia, supported by the "Leading International Cooperation University Project," which is part of the Official Development Assistance (ODA) program led by the Ministry of Education.
Also, in the first part, they discussed establishing an overseas base at Bogor Agricultural University, a top university in Indonesia, to attract outstanding international students and secure excellent foreign research personnel in the long term.
In the second part, professors, graduate students, and undergraduates from the College of Agricultural Life Sciences at Gyeongsang National University participated, and thematic presentations and discussions were held with professors from Bogor Agricultural University and the University of Bohemia in the Czech Republic.
Professor Suryo Wiyono, Dean of Bogor Agricultural University, presented on "International Exchange and Cooperation in the Agricultural Field," Professor Afra D.N. Makalew presented on "Indonesian Agriculture and Agricultural Education," and Professor Awang Maharijaya gave a presentation on "Indonesian Smart Agriculture."
Professor Peter from the University of Bohemia in the Czech Republic gave a presentation on "International Exchange of Professors and Students."
Following the presentations, Dean Kim Min-cheol, Professor Jeong Byeong-ryong, and Professor Shim Sang-in from the College of Agricultural Life Sciences proposed ways for Korea and developing countries, as well as Korea and European universities, to cooperate in international agricultural development cooperation.
This symposium was held after Gyeongsang National University was selected as a cooperating university of the Gyeongnam International Development Cooperation Center by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
Gyeongsang National University was finally selected as a cooperating university of the Gyeongnam International Development Cooperation Center, supported by KOICA and Gyeongsangnam-do, and will perform specialized tasks such as discovering, executing, and consulting on new ODA projects, supporting regional international development cooperation projects, providing ODA education, briefings, meetings, and promotions for residents (general public and students), institutions, and companies, discovering new ODA project cooperation partners and strengthening networks, and supporting KOICA’s World Friends Korea (WK) overseas volunteer activities. The center is scheduled to open at Gyeongsang National University in December.
