Passed away at age 96... Undergoing treatment for leukemia and other illnesses
Did not appear even at the 20th Party Congress, fueling 'health deterioration' rumors
[Asia Economy Beijing=Correspondent Kim Hyunjung] Jiang Zemin, the third-generation top leader of China and former state president, passed away on the 30th, according to a report by the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua.
According to the report, former President Jiang died at 12:13 PM (local time) while receiving treatment in Shanghai due to leukemia and other illnesses. Born in 1926 in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, he was 96 years old.
Classified as the third-generation top leader of China following Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Deng Xiaoping, he continued to exert political influence even after retirement, but after President Xi Jinping's reappointment in 2018, he appeared only occasionally as a former head of state. In particular, rumors circulated that his health had significantly deteriorated as he did not attend the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party held last month.
