[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] Ildong Pharmaceutical Group's health functional food subsidiary, Ildong Bioscience, announced on the 30th that it has obtained 'Halal' certification for its probiotic raw materials.
Halal, an Arabic term meaning 'permissible' or 'allowed,' refers to compliance with Islamic law, Sharia. In the case of food, it indicates items that Muslims are permitted to consume according to the law, considering ingredients, components, manufacturing, and processing methods.
Ildong Bioscience received certification from Indonesia's food, drug, and cosmetics evaluation agency 'LPPOM MUI,' recognized as one of the world's top three Halal certification bodies, for a total of 22 types of beneficial bacteria and probiotic raw materials it produces, including Lactobacillus and Bifidus strains. It was explained that the certification process involved rigorous evaluation procedures and on-site inspections covering not only ingredients and materials but also manufacturing facilities and processes.
An official from Ildong Bioscience stated, “Indonesia, with a population of 276 million, is the world's fourth most populous country, with about 80% of its citizens being Muslim, making it the largest Halal market globally with the highest number of Muslims worldwide.” He added, “We plan to pioneer and expand the Indonesian market by leveraging Halal-certified raw materials.” Furthermore, “In addition to Halal certification, we have also obtained 'Kosher' certification, which complies with Jewish law standards, back in 2020, and we continue to make efforts to enhance the quality and marketability of our probiotic raw materials.”
