[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] SK D&D announced on the 30th that it has commenced commercial operation of the hydrogen fuel cell power plant 'Eumseong Eco Park.'
Located in the Geumwang Industrial Complex in Eumseong-gun, Chungbuk Province, Eumseong Eco Park is a high-efficiency hydrogen fuel cell power plant with a facility capacity of 20 MW and an annual power generation of 165 GWh, supplying electricity sufficient for 45,000 households based on a four-person family in the Chungbuk region. Eumseong Eco Park is operated by a special purpose company (SPC) jointly invested by Korea Western Power and financial investors, and Chungcheong Energy Service will supply city gas.
SK D&D has been promoting the construction of Eumseong Eco Park on a site of approximately 7,270㎡ (2,200 pyeong) with a total project cost of about 132 billion KRW. Construction began in February, and in April, a project finance (PF) agreement worth 110 billion KRW was signed to accelerate the hydrogen fuel cell power plant project.
With this, SK D&D now operates a total of 40 MW of hydrogen fuel cell power plants in the Chungbuk region, following the commercial operation of Cheongju Eco Park (20 MW) last year. The two power plants are expected to produce 330 GWh of electricity annually, significantly contributing to the power self-sufficiency of the Chungbuk region.
SK D&D has secured hydrogen fuel cell power plant project rights totaling 180 MW, including projects in Boeun (20 MW), Chungju (40 MW), Daesowon (40 MW) in Chungbuk, as well as Chilgok (20 MW), Paju (31 MW), Yagmok (9 MW), and Asan (20 MW), and plans to proceed with these sequentially.
Kim Hae-jung, Head of Energy Solutions Division at SK D&D, said, "Hydrogen fuel cells are a key area for the government's promotion of hydrogen economy activation and distributed power sources," adding, "We plan to diversify the hydrogen fuel cell business model as part of ESG management, including green hydrogen production linked with renewable energy such as offshore wind power."
Meanwhile, SK D&D has solidified its position as a leading company in the renewable energy sector, including solar power, onshore wind power, and ESS. Furthermore, to pursue sustainable management and secure future growth engines, it is continuously expanding its business areas as an eco-friendly energy comprehensive platform company, including power brokerage, hydrogen fuel cells, and offshore wind power.
On the 28th, SK D&D announced that it established a joint venture (JV) with the UK-based renewable energy investment firm Glenmont Partners to build a financial platform. As the first step, it plans to purchase solar power generation assets worth 160 billion KRW and actively enter the power brokerage business.
