[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Dongju University (President Jeong Hak-young), which has cultivated a 45-year history as a specialized college in the Seo-gu area of Busan, will change its name to "Busan Health University."


Dongju University announced on the 30th that it received approval from the Ministry of Education on the 25th to change its name to "Busan Health University."


Dongju University was established in 1977 as Dongju Women's Vocational School, starting with six departments: Home Economics, Childcare, Fashion, Commercial Design, Tourism, and Electronic Computing. With a student quota of 480, the first freshmen enrolled in 1978, and to date, it has produced over 65,000 graduates.


The 45-year-old Dongju University will adopt the new name Busan Health University starting March 1, 2023.


Busan Health University newly established the Department of Physical Therapy and the Department of Dental Hygiene in 2000, each with a quota of 40 students. In 2002, the Departments of Social Welfare, Occupational Therapy, and Health Care Administration were added, followed by the Department of Emergency Medical Services in 2004 and the Department of Nursing in 2011, laying the foundation for specialized education in health care.


Kim So-hee, Vice Minister of Education, said, "We formed a task force team for the name change, conducted multiple public hearings and discussions with current students, alumni associations, and faculty members, and after gathering opinions from local medical organizations and associations, we decided on the name Busan Health University. We will strive to cultivate specialized professionals tailored to the local community while cooperating with existing departments."


Vice Minister Kim also stated, "We will continue the 45-year tradition and work hard to nurture customized personnel needed by industries together with citizens."


Busan Health University was selected for the third phase of the Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation Leading College Development Project (LINC 3.0) under the demand-customized growth type, receiving about 12 billion KRW in support over six years, and was also chosen for the Ministry of Education's College Innovation Support Project, receiving 9 billion KRW in support over three years.
