[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] It is reported that the Posco branch, one of the two major labor unions at Posco, is undergoing the withdrawal process from the Korean Metal Workers' Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU).
According to Posco and the Posco union on the 29th, the Posco branch has been conducting a member vote for withdrawal from the KCTU since the previous day. The vote will continue until the 30th, and if two-thirds of the total 264 members approve, the motion will pass.
Previously, the Posco branch held a withdrawal approval vote for members over two days on the 3rd and 4th. At that time, the motion passed with a 66.9% approval rate, but after the Metal Workers' Union raised objections and the Ministry of Employment and Labor requested supplementation, a re-vote was conducted.
On the 23rd, the Posco branch issued a statement criticizing, "The Metal Workers' Union is not working for the union itself but for Posco employees, and therefore, it has expelled the branch president, senior vice president, and secretary elected by Posco employees, and disciplined the executive committee and delegates."
The Posco branch stated, "The change in the organizational form of the Posco branch is proceeding legally, and the majority of branch members support the change in the union's organizational form."
