Prosecutors Deny Extension of Jeong Gyeong-sim's Sentence Suspension... Reimprisonment Scheduled for Next Month 4th Former Dongyang University Professor Jeong Gyeong-shim Photo by Yonhap News

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The prosecution has decided not to extend the suspension of sentence execution for former Dongyang University professor Jeong Gyeong-sim, who was temporarily released for purposes such as herniated disc surgery, and has ordered her re-incarceration. Accordingly, former Professor Jeong will be re-incarcerated in the detention center on the 4th of next month.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office Suspension of Sentence Execution Review Committee reviewed former Professor Jeong's second application for extension of suspension of sentence execution on the 29th and decided not to grant the extension. The committee explained that it comprehensively reviewed the applicant's submitted materials, reasons for the application, on-site inspection results, and opinions of medical advisory committee members.

Song Kyung-ho, the final decision-maker and head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, decided not to approve the extension of the suspension of sentence execution, considering that former Professor Jeong has no additional surgery schedule and is in a condition where outpatient treatment is possible.

Former Professor Jeong was sentenced to four years in prison by the Supreme Court in January for charges including forgery of Dongyang University certificates for her daughter Cho Min and exerting undue influence on her daughter's college admission (obstruction of business, etc.), and has been serving her sentence at Seoul Detention Center. She applied for suspension of sentence execution citing the need for "urgent surgery for disc rupture, stenosis, and lower limb paralysis," was released on the 4th of last month, and applied for an extension once, which extended her release period until the 3rd of next month.
