Manufacturing AI Business Promotion Review
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Song Jong-gu] Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam announced that the research team from the University of Waterloo in Canada visited Changwon City Hall on the 29th to ensure the smooth progress of the Korea-Canada Artificial Intelligence Joint Research Center operation project, which is being promoted jointly by the city, the University of Waterloo, and the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute.
As the first schedule of this visit, on the morning of the 29th, the research team had a meeting with Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City, where they explained the progress of the Korea-Canada AI project and discussed the future development direction of AI technology convergence in the manufacturing sector.
Additionally, they plan to stay in Changwon for four days until December 2nd to conduct special lectures for current employees in the manufacturing AI professional training course and perform on-site inspections of demonstration companies participating in the Korea-Canada project.
The Korea-Canada Artificial Intelligence Joint Research Center operation project is a business that applies the AI technology of the University of Waterloo, which boasts the world’s highest level in manufacturing-applied AI, to Changwon’s traditional manufacturing industry to establish an AI model factory. From 2020 to this year, AI solutions have been implemented in the production processes of seven companies, achieving significant results in the industrial field such as ▲increased corporate productivity ▲reduced defect rates ▲cost reduction ▲improved working environment.
This year, the project is promoting the development of an AI-based precision machining vision inspection system and a plating process shape error reduction system for two companies in the precision machining field, Yeongdong Tech and Terra Science, which is expected to greatly help companies by reducing product defect rates and improving quality.
Professor Kwon Hyuk-joo of the University of Waterloo research team said, “For the two companies selected this year, the system production and construction for AI application have been completed and are currently in pilot operation, and algorithm development is proceeding as planned. Through this visit, we will closely examine the on-site demands and difficulties of the companies to successfully lead the third-year project as well.”
Mayor Hong said, “Artificial intelligence technology is a core technology of digital transformation and essential for smartifying traditional manufacturing. I hope that the excellent manufacturing companies in Changwon and the advanced AI technologies of the University of Waterloo and the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute will come together to create a synergy effect in the Changwon National Industrial Complex.”
