"Will definitely hold accountable"

[Asia Economy Reporters Oh Ju-yeon and Park Jun-i] Park Hong-geun, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced on the 29th that he will submit a motion of dismissal against Lee Sang-min, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. If President Yoon Seok-yeol rejects this, he plans to push for an impeachment motion.

On that day, Park said at the morning floor strategy meeting, "The Democratic Party plans to submit the dismissal motion against Minister Lee tomorrow (the 30th) after holding a party members' meeting this afternoon."

Park explained, "The dismissal of Minister Lee, who oversees public safety but repeatedly misjudged and distorted the situation of the Itaewon disaster, is the minimum responsibility and duty. The fact that 60-70% of the public demands Minister Lee's accountability is because they see it as the starting point and gauge for properly handling a national large-scale disaster."

He emphasized, "If (President Yoon) again ignores the will of the people and the National Assembly, as he did with the dismissal motion against Foreign Minister Park Jin, we will promptly push for an impeachment motion to hold him accountable."

Park added, "This is not an issue to be swept under the rug by endurance and protection. Yesterday, members of the People Power Party's special committee on the state audit threatened the public by saying they might resign if the demand for Minister Lee's dismissal is not withdrawn. We cannot help but ask if this is an admission that the state audit is meant to protect Minister Lee."

He reiterated, "Minister Lee should take political, administrative, and moral responsibility for the disaster that claimed the precious lives of 158 people and step down."
