Gyeonggi-do to Expand 'Sabang Project' for Landslide Prevention Next Year... 13.2 Billion Won Invested Gyeonggi Provincial Government Northern Office

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province announced on the 29th that it will invest a total budget of 13.2 billion KRW next year to expand the implementation of the Sabang Project.

The 'Sabang Project' involves installing forest disaster prevention structures such as Sabang dams or reforesting barren land to prevent damage caused by large branches or stones being washed downstream by heavy rainwater during concentrated heavy rains.

The 2023 budget for the Sabang Project is a total of 13.2 billion KRW, which is about a 69% increase compared to 7.8 billion KRW in 2022.

Focusing on landslide-prone areas within the province, the plan is to construct 30 Sabang dams in a total of 20 cities and counties including Yongin City and Yangpyeong County, and to carry out 14 km of stream conservation projects and 12 hectares of mountain Sabang projects.

Additionally, safety inspections, dredging, and repair work will be conducted on 422 existing Sabang facilities.

The province plans to complete administrative procedures by the end of this year, start the project in March next year, and finish the work by the end of June before the rainy season.

This year, the province invested a total budget of 7.8 billion KRW in 18 cities and counties including Yongin City to promote the Sabang Project, constructing 26 Sabang dams, 8 km of stream conservation, and dredging 21 Sabang dams.

Lee Su-mok, head of the provincial forestry department, said, "We have secured a significantly increased budget and project volume for the Sabang Project," adding, "We will focus on implementing the Sabang Project in landslide-prone areas to thoroughly protect the lives and property of residents from forest disasters."
