[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Emart announced on the 29th that it will start pre-orders for Lunar New Year gift sets (January 22) from the 1st of next month.

Pre-ordering gift sets has become a major trend, accounting for nearly half of total sales during last Chuseok. Ahead of this Lunar New Year, Emart added products with high everyday demand to traditional holiday gifts. They also expanded group purchase items available at special prices. Emart stated, "With high inflation and high interest rates still ongoing during the Lunar New Year, we have reduced the burden of gift costs and increased practicality so that customers can feel the benefits."

Pre-orders for holiday gift sets are increasing due to various benefits such as up to 40% discounts when purchasing with event cards. The proportion of pre-orders in gift set purchases rose from 33% during last year’s Chuseok to 44% this Lunar New Year, and reached 49% during this year’s Chuseok.

The 2023 Lunar New Year gift set pre-order period is from the 1st of next month to January 11 of next year. The total of 42 days matches the longest period ever, which was during the 2022 Chuseok. As one of the strategies to increase customer benefits, Emart will conduct joint funding purchases during the 2023 Lunar New Year pre-orders. Joint funding purchases allow customers to buy at special prices once a certain number of participants gather per product, first introduced during this year’s Chuseok. At that time, all three health functional food products sold out early. This time, different products will be sold via joint purchase: 'HY CareOn Joint Care Premium Gold,' 'Hurum Premium Wild Ginseng Cultured Root,' and 'Jung Kwan Jang Nutri Pack.' Additionally, two olive oil gift sets have been added. If joint funding is achieved for 'Oro Bailen Bio Picual Organic Olive Oil' and 'Oro Magnasur Extra Virgin Olive Oil,' they can be purchased at about 50% off the market price. If 1,000 people gather per product, the joint purchase price applies. The funding application period is from the 22nd of next month to January 2 of next year. The product purchase period is from January 9 to January 21 of next year.

Notable among this Lunar New Year’s gift sets are practical products. In the past, fruit gift sets mainly consisted of ritual fruits like apples or pears, but recently the variety has expanded to include Shine Muscat grapes, kiwis, mangoes, and Hallabong oranges. Emart has also increased products suitable for eco-friendly consumption trends. Gift sets containing fruits certified as 'low carbon' by minimizing carbon emissions during cultivation number 11 for the 2023 Lunar New Year, nearly double the 6 sets available two years ago in 2021.

Pre-order benefits for gift sets are divided into discounts and gift certificates. During the pre-order period, purchasing gift sets with event cards (a total of 14 types) offers up to 40% discount benefits. Depending on the period, Shinsegae gift certificates worth up to 15% of the purchase amount are given based on the purchase amount.
