[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] The Gwangam Substation of the Changwon Maritime Police Station in Gyeongnam was upgraded to a police box and held an opening ceremony on the 28th.

The Changwon Maritime Police stated that Gwangam Beach, the only beach in Changwon City, has more than 40,000 visitors annually on average, and they have faced difficulties in safety management and preventing water-related accidents.

Since the opening of the road network in February 2021, tourists in the jurisdiction, including Jeodo Yeonryukgyo Bridge, Beach Road, Robot Land, and the Marine Drama Set, have more than doubled, they explained.

The Changwon Maritime Police promoted the upgrade of the Gwangam Substation to a police box to stably maintain maritime security, increase response speed in case of accidents, and secure the golden time.

They proposed this to the Namhae Regional Maritime Police Agency and the Korea Coast Guard and received approval for the upgrade to a police box in July this year.

According to the Changwon Maritime Police, the Gwangam Police Box near Gwangam Beach will be responsible for maritime security in the Jindong, Jinjeon, and Gusan-myeon areas of Masanhappo-gu, Changwon City.

Based on the whale head coastline at the western end of Simni, Gusan-myeon, Masanhappo-gu, the west side is under the jurisdiction of the Gwangam Police Box, and the east side is under the Masan Police Box, both ensuring citizen safety.

The personnel, which was previously nine, has increased to 17, and they will carry out patrol and rescue activities, maritime security, and marine pollution prevention over a coastal area of 100㎢, which is ten times the size of Yeouido.

Ryu Yonghwan, Chief of Changwon Maritime Police Station, said, “With more personnel on duty, we will provide prompt security services that meet the public’s expectations and actively carry out security administration that practically solves local residents’ issues.”
