[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Wanyong] Starting from 2027, a total of approximately 70,000 housing units will be supplied in the Gyeonggi-do Gwangmyeong-Siheung Public Housing District, which is 4.3 times the area of Yeouido.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 28th that the designation of the public housing district has been officially notified after completing the public hearing, strategic environmental impact assessment, and review by the Central Urban Planning Committee for the Gwangmyeong-Siheung district on the 29th.
Considering the geographical characteristics spanning two local governments, Gwangmyeong City and Siheung City in Gyeonggi-do, the Gwangmyeong-Siheung Public Housing District aims for a development direction called the "Dual Hub City prepared together by Gwangmyeong and Siheung." The plan is to promote a large-scale public housing district (12.71 million square meters) prioritizing residential environments such as jobs, education, and culture.
The Ministry of Land plans to establish a new urban railway crossing Gwangmyeong-Siheung to enable access to downtown Seoul within 20 minutes, connecting it with GTX-B (Sindorim Station, scheduled to open in 2030), thereby building a rail-centered public transportation system.
Additionally, they intend to promptly prepare a wide-area transportation improvement plan, including the construction and expansion of roads linking the district and its surroundings, to create a city with convenient transportation that prioritizes public transit and wide-area accessibility to Seoul and neighboring cities.
Centered around Mokgamcheon, which runs north-south through the district, a green ecological axis organically connecting the surrounding forests and good green spaces within the district will be established, along with themed natural parks utilizing the Mokgamcheon waterfront space.
Furthermore, an international design competition will be promoted to incorporate world-class urban development ideas, with related projects starting next year and district plans approved in 2024. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, aiming for housing supply in 2027.
Park Jaesoon, Director of the Public Housing Promotion Division at the Ministry of Land, said, "This district is the first to be designated following the government's policy announcement, and districts such as Uiwang, Gunpo, and Ansan will be sequentially designated to establish a stable foundation for expanding opportunities for young people and low-income households without homes to own their own houses."
