President Yoon: "We Must Firmly Establish Rule of Law in Labor Relations"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] President Yoon Seok-yeol announced that he "plans to personally preside over the Cabinet meeting tomorrow (29th) to deliberate on the work commencement order for the Cargo Solidarity (Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Public Transport Workers' Union Cargo Solidarity Headquarters)." This move is interpreted as a strong indication of the imminent issuance of the work commencement order.
On the morning of the 28th, during the senior secretaries' meeting at the Presidential Office, President Yoon addressed the collective transportation refusal by the Cargo Solidarity, stating, "We must firmly establish the rule of law between labor and management," according to a written briefing delivered by Chief Public Relations Secretary Kim Eun-hye. This written briefing was urgently provided to reporters during the senior secretaries' meeting presided over by the President.
Additionally, President Yoon emphasized in the meeting that "regarding labor issues, it is important to firmly establish laws and principles whether the illegal acts are committed by the labor side or the company side."
Originally, this Cabinet meeting was scheduled to be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Choo Kyung-ho, substituting for Prime Minister Han Duck-soo who is on an African tour, but President Yoon declared that he would preside over it personally.
Accordingly, if negotiations between the government and the Cargo Solidarity are not concluded before the Cabinet meeting, the likelihood of issuing a work commencement order is high.
