Gangnam-gu Launches Largest Delivery Robot Pilot Project in Downtown Seoul

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) is promoting the ‘Teheran-ro Robot Street Creation Project’ and has been operating six indoor delivery robots and two serving robots at COEX Mall and Trade Tower since the 31st of last month.

This project is a public contest project for ‘AI·5G-based Large-scale Robot Convergence Model Demonstration’ led by the Korea Institute for Robot Industry Advancement. Woowa Brothers (Baedal Minjok) is the lead organization, and a consortium was formed with five institutions including Gangnam-gu, Seoul Metropolitan Government, LG Electronics, WTC Seoul, and LX Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation. It is the largest-scale demonstration project in downtown Seoul operating multiple and various robots in COEX Mall, which attracts 36 million visitors annually, and the heavily trafficked Teheran-ro. Phase 1 operates indoor delivery robots, and Phase 2 will operate outdoor delivery robots.

Accordingly, since the end of last month, two serving robots called ‘Dilly Plate’ have been operating, and six indoor delivery robots called ‘Dilly Tower’ are delivering coffee and other food from COEX stores to offices in Trade Tower. The 54-story Trade Center is a multi-use facility with 3,600 on-site employees. The D2D (Door to Door) service, where six robots take elevators and deliver directly to office doors, is regarded as the latest version of robot service.

Delivery robot use is available on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (break time from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.). Users select the office number to receive delivery through the ‘Baedal Minjok’ app, authenticate separately, and then receive the items. To ensure accurate D2D delivery, an indoor space digital map and integrated control system have been established.

Based on the results of this year’s Phase 1 experiment, next year plans include expanding indoor delivery robots and Phase 2 will involve autonomous delivery robots operating outdoors on sidewalks. To this end, a digital address map for robot navigation linked to road name addresses and an integrated indoor-outdoor control system will be established.

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “We will support the successful promotion of the Teheran-ro robot demonstration project to accelerate commercialization.” He added, “In the future, we will proactively introduce robot services in the public sector in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.”

Gangseo-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Kim Tae-woo) announced that it has been selected as the ‘Best Institution’ for three consecutive years in the ‘2022 Land and Cadastral Management Work Evaluation’ conducted by Seoul City.

The Land and Cadastral Management Work Evaluation is conducted annually by the city to evaluate overall land and cadastral work, select excellent institutions and contributors, award commendations, and share best practices to implement advanced real estate policies.

This year’s evaluation assessed the performance related to land and cadastral work carried out by 25 autonomous districts in Seoul from October last year to September this year. It was divided into five areas: ▲Land Policy ▲Real Estate Appraisal ▲Real Estate Management ▲Spatial Surveying ▲Cadastral Re-survey.

The district achieved the best institution award in the real estate management field through active responses to prevent social issues such as ‘empty shell jeonse’ and jeonse fraud damages, and innovation in brokerage culture in cooperation with real estate brokerage offices.

In particular, in August, the district signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Gangseo Police Station and the Korea Association of Realtors to prevent empty shell jeonse damages, operated a prevention T/F team for proactive response, and was highly evaluated for its active administration.

Additionally, the operation of a counseling center for real estate empty shell jeonse damage prevention, promotion of brokerage fee reduction projects for young tenants, and education for brokerage workers were also highly praised for advancing real estate brokerage culture and establishing transaction order.

The district plans to continue implementing various policies to prevent residents’ damages and protect property rights in the rapidly changing real estate market, not stopping at this achievement.

Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo-gu, said, “It is more meaningful to receive good evaluations in real estate management work directly related to residents’ property rights in such an unstable real estate market.” He added, “We will continue to do our best to realize advanced real estate policies for establishing proper real estate transaction order and protecting residents’ property rights.”
