Prosecutors Summarily Indict Public Corruption Investigation Office Prosecutor for 'Wife Assault' with a 1 Million Won Fine

[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Kyung-jun] A prosecutor affiliated with the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (Gong-su-cheo) was summarily indicted for assaulting his wife and causing injury.

According to the legal community on the 25th, the Women and Children Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Eun-mi) summarily indicted Gong-su-cheo prosecutor A yesterday on charges of injury, requesting a fine of 1 million won.

A summary indictment is a procedure in which the prosecution requests the court to impose a fine or penalty through written review only, instead of a formal trial.

Prosecutor A is accused of assaulting and injuring his wife during a foreign trip in February 2019. A's wife filed a police complaint last September accusing her husband of assault and injury, and the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency forwarded the case to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office in June this year, applying only the injury charge with a partial prosecution opinion.

At the time of the incident, Prosecutor A was a lawyer at a major law firm and was appointed to Gong-su-cheo in April last year. He submitted his resignation in September citing personal reasons, but Gong-su-cheo Chief Kim Jin-wook rejected it.

Gong-su-cheo stated, "Prosecutor A submitted his resignation again at the end of September after his first resignation was rejected, and the procedure for accepting the resignation is currently underway. Although the charges against Prosecutor A occurred during his civilian period before his appointment as a prosecutor, we have determined that he can no longer perform his duties as a public official."
