[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kyungho Ahn] Ulleung-gun, Gyeongbuk, held the ‘Usan Cultural Festival,’ which had been suspended due to COVID-19, from the 19th to the 24th.
The Usan Cultural Festival is a traditional and unique cultural event of Ulleung-gun that inherits the history and tradition starting from Usan-guk, honors the pioneering spirit of Ulleungdo, and promotes harmony among residents.
Until the 15th festival in 2018, the event was held on an outdoor stage featuring celebrity invitation performances, traditional folk experiences, and local food demonstrations and tastings. From this year’s 16th festival, it was newly organized with indoor exhibitions and performances by Ulleung cultural and artistic groups. This is significant as it marks the beginning of a proactive performance and exhibition culture where local artists directly organize and participate in the event.
On September 29, the Ulleung cultural and artistic groups, composed of local cultural and artistic organizations (including individuals), created a communication channel for cultural artists aiming to promote Ulleung-gun’s distinctive artistic culture.
In particular, by co-hosting this Usan Cultural Festival with the Ulleung Cultural Center and gathering local artists to participate, it is evaluated that the event contributed to the development of local art and culture.
Nam Han-kwon, the county governor, said, “Through the Usan Cultural Festival, we will inherit and continue the history and tradition of Ulleungdo, which began with Usan-guk.”
