[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] On the 24th, Gijang-gun, Busan, conducted an on-site drill to prepare for a radiation leak accident, with about 1,000 residents and students participating across Gijang-gun and Gangseo Sports Park.
The drill was carried out as the second day of the '2022 National Radiation Disaster Prevention Joint Drill (11.23~24)' and comprehensively covered key areas of resident protection measures, including ▲radiation emergency alert dissemination ▲indoor evacuation and traffic control ▲resident evacuation ▲distribution of thyroid protection medicine ▲relief for disaster victims (around Gangseo Sports Park) ▲and resident return training.
Jeong Jong-bok, the head of Gijang-gun, observed the entire drill process related to resident evacuation and relief activities for disaster victims at Gangseo Sports Park, checked the progress of the drill, and encouraged participants including residents, students, related agencies, and disaster prevention personnel (public officials).
Additionally, he held an on-site meeting with the Deputy Mayor of Busan and the Deputy Superintendent of Busan Metropolitan Office of Education to review various aspects of the drill and discuss future development plans.
Jeong pointed out, "Last year, Busan City expanded the radiation emergency planning zone up to 30 km, designating Gangseo Sports Park as a shelter for disaster victims. As a result, a significant portion of the total drill time was spent traveling by bus, which raised concerns about resident inconvenience and safety."
He emphasized, "It is necessary to guarantee enough time for residents participating in the drill to have sufficient hands-on experience and to develop various educational contents that can stimulate interest."
In this 2022 National Radiation Disaster Prevention Joint Drill, about 600 residents from 21 villages within the 5 km preventive protection zone around the Kori Nuclear Power Plant and about 400 students from the entire student body of Jang-an Middle School in Gijang-gun directly participated in the drill, conducting resident evacuation and relief activities for disaster victims.
