[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the 25th that it has newly appointed Professor Inho Lee of Chung-Ang University Law School, chairman of the board of the Korea Internet Self-Governance Organization, as the chairman of the Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee.

Attorney Jinhwan Kim of Whale & Sun, Attorney Kwangbae Park of Law Firm Gwangjang, and Professor Soyoung Cho of Pusan National University Law School were also appointed as members of the Dispute Mediation Committee.

Newly appointed Dispute Mediation Committee Chairman Inho Lee is an expert who has been actively engaged in personal information protection activities and has consistently provided policy suggestions regarding the role of the Personal Information Protection Commission and directions for legal and institutional improvements. He also serves as the civilian chairman of the Personal Information Regulation Review Committee.

The appointed civilian members are legal experts in fields related to personal information, data, and damage relief, and are expected to further enhance the expertise of the Dispute Mediation Committee.

The Dispute Mediation Committee is an organization composed of 20 experts from various fields such as academia and the legal profession. According to Article 40 of the Personal Information Protection Act, when disputes arise due to personal information infringement, it supports prompt and amicable resolution through mediation that has the effect of a court settlement instead of litigation.

The number of dispute mediation applications has been increasing annually due to the public’s growing awareness of personal information protection and the increased use of personal information by companies. Last year, there were 870 cases, doubling compared to the previous year.

In response to the rapid advancement of the data economy and the heightened public awareness of personal information, the Dispute Mediation Committee plans to take the lead in protecting citizens’ personal information and safeguarding their rights based on the diverse expertise and experience of its members.
