Gwangju City Intensifies Crackdown on Illegal Advertisements Around Restaurants and University Areas

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City and its five autonomous districts will conduct a focused cleanup of illegal mobile advertisements targeting areas with high foot traffic, such as restaurant districts and university surroundings, from the 28th of this month until the 31st of next month, coinciding with year-end parties and Christmas events.

This focused cleanup of illegal advertisements will be carried out by a crackdown team composed of 75 members: 38 from 10 teams of Gwangju City and autonomous districts, and 37 from 14 private service teams. They will inspect illegal advertisements in restaurant-dense areas such as the Sangmu district, Yongbong district, and Cheomdan district, as well as commercial areas around universities.

The targets for cleanup include ▲ illegal signboards, flyers, and balloon advertisements that pose a hazard to pedestrians to prevent winter slipping accidents ▲ unregistered or expired streetlight banners ▲ illegal promotional materials targeting examinees after the College Scholastic Ability Test ▲ mass-posted illegal advertisements such as apartment sales promotions.

Gwangju City and the five autonomous districts operate a 365 cleanup team separately to remove illegal advertisements during vulnerable times such as weekday nights and weekends, in addition to regular weekday working hours. They also conduct cleanup and educational activities to eradicate illegal advertisements through citizen participation collection reward programs and an automatic illegal advertisement warning transmission system.

Park Geumhwa, Director of the Architecture and Landscape Division, stated, “Since illegal advertisements in areas with high foot traffic at the end of the year can threaten citizens’ safety, we will create a pleasant street environment through continuous cleanup and publicity.”
