[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Pyeonghwa] Samsung Electronics, which announced its subscription to RE100 (100% renewable energy use), is actively working to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In particular, it is collaborating with domestic power companies to accelerate the transition to renewable energy in its semiconductor business, which consumes a large amount of electricity.
According to the semiconductor industry on the 24th, Samsung Electronics' DS Division, responsible for the semiconductor business, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with three domestic power companies regarding securing and expanding the use of renewable energy.
Samsung Electronics signed a "Mutual Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding for Joint Response to RE100" with Korea South-East Power Company the day before. This is to exchange information related to renewable energy policies and development projects and to cooperate in the implementation of RE100 and the revitalization of the renewable energy industry.
On the 21st, Samsung Electronics signed an "RE100 Joint Response Mutual Cooperation MOU" with Korea Southern Power Company. This is to cooperate in the future distribution and use of renewable energy. Samsung Electronics explained that this cooperation will also lay the groundwork for responding to various global regulatory measures related to carbon.
On the 18th, Samsung Electronics signed an "RE100 MOU for Realizing Carbon Neutrality" with Jeju Energy Corporation. Both parties plan to secure means to implement RE100 and exchange information on renewable energy development projects and policies to establish a carbon-neutral foundation. They will also promote mutual cooperation for the supply and use of renewable energy.
Nam Seok-woo, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) and Vice President of Global Manufacturing & Infrastructure at Samsung Electronics' DS Division, said, "The agreement with domestic power companies has laid the foundation for securing renewable energy to achieve the 2050 carbon neutrality goal," adding, "We will continue to reduce carbon emissions to participate in global efforts to address climate change."
Samsung Electronics declared its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through the "New Environmental Management Strategy" announced last September. It also announced its subscription to the RE100 initiative.
