Gwangjin-gu Launches Initiative to Create Zero-Waste Office Without Disposable Cups Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin District (second from the right), is conducting a campaign to restrict the use of disposable products with employees.

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has embarked on creating a "Zero Disposable Cup Government Building" to lead public institutions in practicing an eco-friendly consumption culture that reduces the use of disposable products in daily life.

Starting January 1 next year, the district will restrict the use of disposable cups within office spaces in the government building and encourage the use of personal tumblers and reusable cups.

Prior to this, the district has established a "Reusable Cup Sharing System" and will conduct a "Join the Zero Disposable Cup Government Building Campaign" throughout November.

The reusable cup sharing system operates by paying a 1,000 KRW deposit for cups at the reusable cup sharing caf? called "Zero Caf?" along with the takeout beverage price. Users return the used reusable cups to an unmanned collection machine inside the government building to receive their deposit back in cash or points.

To facilitate this, the district is actively recruiting "Zero Caf?s" around the government building and installing unmanned reusable cup return machines on the first floor of the Civil Welfare Building, which has high foot traffic, to encourage employees and visitors to conveniently participate in environmental protection.

Additionally, the campaign encouraging the use of personal tumblers and guiding to Zero Caf?s that accept reusable cups will be conducted daily until the end of November as part of the "Join the Zero Disposable Cup Government Building Campaign."

Since this campaign takes advantage of lunchtime when many people enter the government building through the main gate, it will also promote the expanded restrictions on disposable product use starting from the 24th, encouraging residents visiting the district office to participate in environmental protection.

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, stated, "Creating a zero disposable cup government building is designed for public institutions to take the lead in changing perceptions and achieving reduction results regarding disposable products." He added, "As environmental issues have become a necessity rather than a choice, we will make multifaceted efforts to build a sustainable city by sharing and practicing the importance of disposable product use regulations with our residents."
