Gwangju Police Agency Strictly Responds to Illegal Acts During Cargo Solidarity Strike

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] The Gwangju Police Agency announced on the 23rd that it will strictly respond according to the law and principles to illegal activities such as obstructing logistics transportation in relation to the nationwide Cargo Solidarity strike.

Earlier, the Cargo Solidarity union went on an eight-day general strike in June demanding the abolition of the sunset clause on the Safe Freight Rate System. At that time, after continuous discussions with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, an agreement was reached and the strike ended, but despite the approaching deadline of December 31 for the application of the Safe Freight Rate System, follow-up measures have been sluggish, leading to a recent decision to strike again.

Currently, the Cargo Solidarity union is demanding the expansion of the Safe Freight Rate System to items other than containers and cement transport vehicles, and plans to launch an indefinite nationwide full strike.

Accordingly, the Gwangju Police Agency will guarantee assemblies held legally during the strike period, but will strictly enforce the law and prosecute in principle if illegal acts occur. In particular, they plan to apprehend on-site those involved in obstructing transportation, occupying lanes, assaulting transport drivers or police officers, and damaging vehicles.

A Gwangju Police Agency official urged, “Please actively report to 112 if any damage occurs due to illegal acts by the Cargo Solidarity union.”
