[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seoyoon] SK Innovation employees had an honest conversation on the theme of ‘happiness’ with ‘National Mentor’ Dr. Oh Eun-young.
On the 23rd, SK Innovation announced that it held ‘November Happiness Walk: Oh Eun-young’s Precious SK Innovation’ by inviting psychiatrist Dr. Oh Eun-young at the SK Seorin Building in Jongno-gu, Seoul the day before.
At the event, Dr. Oh appeared and extended her hand with a bright smile to SK Innovation employees who were selected through a lottery to participate on-site, initiating handshakes. The employees cheered and warmly greeted her as she met them from behind rather than from the front of the stage while passing by.
Dr. Oh gave a lecture for about 20 minutes on ‘happiness,’ which is the goal of SK Group. She asked, “Are you working happily right now?” and emphasized, “To be happy, it is necessary to understand yourself.”
She continued, “You need to know how you communicate and interact with those around you. Understanding yourself allows you to be more stable and better cope with various situations,” adding, “Stability is important to get along well with people around you such as family, lovers, colleagues, and friends. Getting along well with ‘myself’ is the beginning of getting along well with others.”
SK Innovation also accepted questions from employees who wanted counseling from Dr. Oh that day. One employee, who introduced themselves as born in the 1980s and part of the so-called ‘in-between generation,’ asked, “I have many concerns about communicating with MZ (Millennial + Generation Z) generation colleagues.” Another employee, balancing child-rearing and work life, confided, “I am worried about how I can be a better parent to my child.”
Dr. Oh emphasized the importance of active ‘communication’ in response to both questions. She said, “Even between people who love each other, love must be expressed for it to be conveyed,” and encouraged, “The best thing today is to maintain ‘my own stability.’ If you are struggling, discuss it with those around you and do not be afraid.”
Happiness Walk is SK Innovation’s representative employee communication activation program that started in 2016. It is designed to recharge happiness through various communication activities. It was temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and resumed in May this year.
The Happiness Walk, which lasted about an hour, was simultaneously broadcast on SK Group’s online learning system ‘mySUNI,’ allowing employees who could not attend in person to listen to Dr. Oh’s mentoring. Ending her lecture with the farewell, “Everyone, please live happily,” Dr. Oh left a deep memory with SK Innovation employees by taking a group commemorative photo.
In addition to Happiness Walk, SK Innovation has been operating the in-house counseling coaching center ‘Harmonia’ since 2005, providing support systems that enable employees to actively pursue their happiness. Harmonia, named as ‘a place to find harmony between work and life,’ is operated not only to solve problems but also to help growth in work and life.
An Ok-kyung, Head of Happiness Management at SK Innovation, said, “SK Innovation believes that the company prospers and society moves in a better direction only when employees are happy, and we are actively seeking activities for employees’ happiness,” adding, “We plan to continue proactive system and cultural improvement activities to pursue employees’ happiness in the future.”
