[Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan] President Yoon Suk-yeol emphasized the importance of exports on the 22nd, stating, "Our economy has opened up new paths through exports both in the 1960s and now." President Yoon mentioned, "Although the current economy has shifted towards a technology-intensive direction, ultimately, our way to survive must be through exports."
Kim Eun-hye, Chief of Public Relations at the Presidential Office, conveyed President Yoon's remarks from the Cabinet meeting during a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office in the afternoon, stating, "He urged all Cabinet members to do their best to support companies' overseas expansion and export fronts."
In particular, President Yoon requested Cabinet members to actively engage in minister-level multilateral meetings and bilateral talks. He explained, "State affairs and diplomacy are like two sides of the same coin," adding, "In the diplomacy we pursue, as a global pivotal state seeking freedom, peace, and prosperity, market-led and private sector-led economies are all part of the same context." He further added, "To enable companies to work freely in a private sector-led economy, it is necessary to ease regulations and provide reasonable support in taxation."
President Yoon repeatedly emphasized 'exports' while referring to an export-driven economy. He stated, "We need to check if there are any matters related to our ministries on the export front, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Industry must share information and necessary issues and cooperate with each other for the industry's advancement."
Earlier, in his opening remarks, he called for the National Assembly's cooperation for livelihood and economic recovery. President Yoon said, "Financial and institutional support through budgets and bills is very important," and warned, "If we miss the right timing due to political strife, the damage will ultimately fall directly on the people." This emphasized the importance of timely handling for the people's welfare amid sharp confrontations between ruling and opposition parties over budgets and bills. A Presidential Office official said, "Efforts for dialogue between the ruling and opposition parties will not cease."
President Yoon's remarks relate to the diplomatic outcomes from last week's Southeast Asia tour. During the Cabinet meeting, he mentioned the achievements of the recent tour one by one and instructed the establishment of additional support measures, emphasizing the importance of backing through budgets and bills. President Yoon said, "Over the past ten days, we held the Korea-ASEAN Summit, G20 Summit, Korea-US-Japan Summit, and Korea-China Summit, and after returning, we had a series of meetings with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, and Spain," adding, "The international community recognizes South Korea and desires close cooperation with us. They hope to expand cooperation not only in Korea's top-level infrastructure construction, semiconductor and digital advanced technologies, nuclear power and defense sectors but also in cultural content fields." Regarding cooperation with Indonesia, he said, "The 10 MOUs signed with Indonesia, which has great potential for cooperation with us in investment, core industries, minerals, and digital sectors, will be an important milestone for economic cooperation between the two countries."
Additionally, President Yoon instructed the establishment of follow-up measures related to the Itaewon tragedy. He stated, "Public safety is the nation's top priority," and announced, "Following the recent national safety system inspection meeting, we will gather experts soon to prepare a comprehensive countermeasure plan." This also reiterated his directive for a thorough investigation into the tragedy. President Yoon instructed, "The police special investigation team must devote all efforts to a thorough investigation," and ordered, "Ensure flawless operation of the one-stop integrated support center to fully support the bereaved families and the injured from the Itaewon tragedy."
