"Considering Various Sanctions for Provocations Even Without Nuclear Tests"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hee-jun] The government has announced its stance to consider imposing sanctions in the cyber sector if North Korea continues its serious provocations.
Im Soo-seok, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated at a regular briefing on the 22nd, "As North Korea's provocations continue, we are also considering additional independent sanctions measures," adding, "The government recognizes that if North Korea carries out serious provocations such as a 7th nuclear test, an unprecedentedly strong response must be taken. Accordingly, we plan to consider designating individuals involved in North Korea's cyber activities as sanction targets and imposing sanctions in the cyber sector."
He further explained that during the process of reviewing additional independent sanctions, they are closely consulting with allied countries including the United States and Japan to enhance the effectiveness of these independent sanctions.
Additionally, Cho Hyun-dong, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wendy Sherman, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, and Moritakeo, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, agreed through a phone consultation on the same day to review and coordinate additional individual sanctions measures against North Korea at each country's level.
Meanwhile, a Foreign Ministry official told reporters that the criteria for considering sanctions in the North Korean cyber sector are, "Even if it is not a nuclear test, if (North Korea) commits illegal provocations and violates international society and UN resolutions, various appropriate sanctions measures will be reviewed."
