[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yuseong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon District, awarded a ‘Special Commendation for Model Youth’ to a teenager who extinguished a vehicle fire early inside a tunnel on the 21st, preventing a major disaster.


Kim So-bin (12), a first-year student at the National Traditional Arts Middle School, extinguished a vehicle fire in the Gilmajae Tunnel on the Yongin-Seoul Expressway around 4 p.m. on September 13th using a fire extinguisher together with her father.


The story became known later after the owner of the accident vehicle posted online about the good deed of a middle school student and her father who helped put out the fire on his vehicle.


Accordingly, Geumcheon District selected Kim So-bin as a model youth after a review by the October Public Merit Review Committee.


The Special Commendation for Model Youth is an honor given to actively encourage exemplary and good deeds of youth who have become role models in the community through citizen recommendations and media reports.


Yuseong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon District, said, “I was deeply moved by Kim So-bin’s courage in risking her own safety to prevent a major disaster,” adding, “We will continue to discover youth who serve as role models for local residents every year and strive to create a bright and healthy local culture.”

Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo District, held the ‘2022 Traffic Safety Guidance Meritorious Person Commendation Ceremony’ on the morning of the 22nd at the audiovisual room on the 4th floor of Mapo District Office.


This commendation was awarded to 15 meritorious persons from the Mapo Model Drivers Association and the Mapo Green Mothers’ Union who have quietly volunteered for traffic safety in places requiring special safety guidance, such as during busy commuting hours and children’s school routes.


Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo District, said, “I express my gratitude to those who have worked hard in every way to create a safe traffic culture for residents,” adding, “We will do our best to create a safe traffic environment and a secure society that protects residents’ lives.”

Jongno District (Mayor Jeong Moon-heon) signed a ‘Sister City Agreement’ with Geochang County on the 22nd at the district office’s planning situation room.


Through this agreement, they plan to discover joint policy tasks across various fields such as education, jobs, culture, and tourism, continuously exchange, and seek mutual development plans.


Mayor Jeong Moon-heon said, “Jongno District and Geochang County share many commonalities including educational projects, theater festivals, and Hanok villages,” adding, “We especially expect to promote mutual development in education and job sectors.”

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, installed throwable fire extinguishers at Yangpyeong 14 District, where public redevelopment is underway, on the afternoon of the 22nd.


On that day, Mayor Choi, along with related department staff, toured the alleys of Yangpyeong 14 District, checking safety conditions in areas vulnerable to collapse and fire, and directly guided nearby residents attending the site on how to use throwable fire extinguishers and initial fire response methods.


Mayor Choi Ho-kwon said, “Since fire risks increase in winter due to dry weather and increased use of heating appliances, special caution is necessary,” adding, “We will do our best to protect residents’ lives and property from winter fires and various disasters.”


Meanwhile, the district completed the additional installation of about 120 throwable fire extinguishers in Yangpyeong 14 District, where large-scale human and property damage is feared due to the concentration of old houses.

The opening ceremony of the Dongdaemun Municipal Silver/Daycare Center was held at 2 p.m. on the 22nd.


The ceremony was attended by about 100 people including Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun District, Kim Ho-il, Chairman of the Senior Support Foundation, Lee Soo-yeon, Welfare Planning Officer of Seoul City Hall, Lee Tae-in, Chairman of Dongdaemun District Council, local city and district council members, Chairman of the Korean Senior Citizens Association Dongdaemun Branch, and local residents. The event proceeded with guest introductions, progress and facility reports, greetings, congratulatory speeches, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.


The Dongdaemun Municipal Silver/Daycare Center was completed after about two years of construction from August 2019 to August 2021 and is operated under consignment by the Senior Support Foundation.


It was designated as a long-term care institution on May 17, 2022, and began recruiting elderly residents for admission and use from May 24. Currently, 62 elderly people (capacity 77) are admitted to the Silver Care Center, and 26 elderly people (capacity 28) use the Daycare Center.


Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun District, said, “I would like to thank the residents of Dapsimni 1-dong for their understanding and support despite the inconveniences such as dust and noise during the construction period of the Dongdaemun Municipal Silver/Daycare Center,” adding, “We will create a Dongdaemun District where the elderly can live healthy and happy lives and prioritize walking together with the vulnerable as the highest value along with Seoul City.”

Gangnam District (Mayor Jo Sung-myung) Segok Nanum Scholarship Association will hold the ‘2022 Segok Youth Scholarship Award Ceremony’ at 6 p.m. on the 24th in the auditorium on the 3rd floor of the Segok-dong Community Center.


Now in its 8th year, the ‘Segok Nanum Scholarship Award Ceremony’ will provide a total of 50 million KRW in scholarships to 30 high school and university students. Additionally, three scholarship association members who have made significant contributions to fundraising and youth development activities will receive commendations from the district mayor.


Since 2012, the Segok Nanum Scholarship Association, formed by voluntary donations from local residents, has been conducting various scholarship projects, donating development funds to middle and high schools in the area, and has supported 273 students with a total of 320 million KRW in scholarships to date.


Furthermore, the association supports the ‘Segok Youth Study Room,’ where soldiers from the Air Force 15th Special Mission Wing participate as learning mentors, and ‘Youth Career Consulting’ in collaboration with a well-known career consulting firm in Daechi-dong.


Jung Hyun-young, Head of Segok-dong, said, “Voluntary donations and sharing by residents have become the driving force for nurturing talented youth in Gangnam District,” adding, “We thank the Segok Nanum Scholarship Association for leading various youth scholarship projects and will actively support further development of scholarship programs.”
