Jeju Island Ensures Minimizing Inconvenience in Returning Single-Use Cups

[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is making thorough preparations in various ways to minimize inconvenience for residents, tourists, and participating stores ahead of the implementation of the disposable cup deposit system on the 2nd of next month, including expanding public collection facilities in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment (Minister Han Hwa-jin).

According to Jeju Province on the 22nd, the Ministry of Environment and the Resource Circulation Deposit Management Center (Chairman Jung Bok-young) are expanding public return locations outside stores to reduce the burden on stores subject to the disposable cup deposit system in the Jeju area and to allow consumers to conveniently return cups. They also support the installation of unmanned simple collection machines at participating stores.

Consumers can easily return cups and receive their deposit by simply scanning their own serial number and the disposable cup's serial number in order at the simple collection machine.

Also, after installing the ‘Resource Circulation Deposit’ app and signing up as a member, the deposit is assigned and can be transferred to the consumer’s registered account through the app.

Currently, demand is being surveyed for a total of 437 stores in the Jeju area, and devices will be distributed to all stores that wish to install them.

Jeju Province plans to install more than 40 manned public return locations in major tourist routes such as airports, passenger terminals (ports), rental car parking lots, and public parking lots and recycling help centers around areas densely populated with stores.

In addition, simple collection machines will be additionally installed near small takeout specialty stores where space is limited and cup returns are difficult, utilizing clean houses and locations adjacent to bus stops.

Heo Moon-jung, Director of the Jeju Provincial Environmental Conservation Bureau, said, “The disposable cup deposit system aims to reduce the use of disposable cups and to separately collect and recycle disposable cups that are inevitably used so that they are not illegally discarded or incinerated mixed with other waste.”

He added, “We will cooperate with the Ministry of Environment to improve the system to minimize inconvenience to stores due to the disposable cup deposit system and to allow consumers to easily return cups.”
