LG Household & Health Care Applies Eco-Friendly Cosmetic Containers Made from '100% Recycled Plastic Pyrolysis Oil'

[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] LG Household & Health Care is applying eco-friendly cosmetic containers made from 100% pure 'waste plastic pyrolysis oil'?a first in the domestic cosmetics industry?to its products.

Waste plastic pyrolysis oil is oil produced by heating plastic waste that is difficult to recycle, such as waste vinyl and composite materials, at high temperatures of 300~500℃ in an oxygen-free environment. It has a significant greenhouse gas reduction effect because it reuses waste plastic as raw material instead of incinerating it.

Until now, it was difficult to use waste plastic pyrolysis oil as a raw material for eco-friendly plastics due to impurities such as chlorine contained in the oil. However, with the development of a post-processing process to remove impurities and the recent regulatory sandbox system allowing the use of pyrolysis oil in petrochemical processes, the path to manufacturing plastics using pyrolysis oil has opened.

On the 14th, LG Household & Health Care signed a strategic cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hyundai Chemical and Lotte Chemical to promote the eco-friendly plastics business. Hyundai Chemical will introduce waste plastic pyrolysis oil as a raw material in existing refining processes to manufacture eco-friendly plastics, Lotte Chemical will develop new product lines that can be applied through manufacturing and optimization of eco-friendly plastic products, and LG Household & Health Care will mass-produce eco-friendly cosmetic containers by receiving the plastics.

The first containers made from pyrolysis oil plastic will be simultaneously applied to two products from LG Household & Health Care's Beyond line: the ‘Angel Aqua Moisture Soothing Cream’ and the ‘Angel Aqua Moisture Barrier Cream.’ After safety evaluations including strength and presence of harmful substances in the pyrolysis oil containers, mass production is scheduled to begin in January next year.
