Gwanak Youth Week Starts... Nowon-gu Youth Job Center 'Cheongnyeon Naeil' Opens

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) has designated the period from the 22nd to the 26th as Youth Week to encourage young people to proactively discover agendas and propose district policies, and is conducting the '2022 Gwanak Youth Network Capacity Building Education.'

Since its launch in 2020, now in its third term, the Gwanak Youth Network is a participatory network project where local youth gather to form divisions, discover and propose youth policies desired by young people, and hold related forums and discussions.

This Gwanak Youth Network capacity building education is the first face-to-face training since its launch. Youth committee members, organized into four divisions?culture and arts, jobs, social participation, and life stability?have planned the program themselves, moving beyond simple lecture listening to a communication space where youth members present and discuss topics.

The first start of Youth Week is led by the culture and arts division, which is most closely connected to youth. On the 22nd at 7 p.m., a networking party will be held at the cultural space ‘Ayaoye’ under the theme ‘Restoring Youthfulness in Culture and Arts.’ Cultural artists and young people living in Gwanak-gu will gather to share their sense of ‘youthfulness’ experienced in the cultural arts field and exchange opinions on youth hobbies and interests.

The jobs division will hold an open discussion on platform labor and the actual conditions of youth labor on the 24th at 7 p.m. at Gwanak Orang Sillim-dong Three Room, with a lecture by Kim Jong-jin, director of the Union Center.

Following that, the social participation division will hold a ‘chat meeting’ on the 25th at 7 p.m. at the cultural space ‘Ayaoye,’ featuring a lecture on youth social participation by Lee Yoon-joo of the Korea Youth Policy Institute and a free discussion on the recently changing youth society.

The life stability division will discuss youth housing on the last day of Youth Week, the 26th, at 3 p.m. Jang Min-young, director of the Village Regeneration Center at the Architectural Space Research Institute, will give a lecture titled ‘Settlement and Establishment in Gwanak,’ focusing on the settlement and establishment of youth who have moved from rural areas.

Additionally, the cultural platform S1472 on Gwanchun-ro near Sillim Station will operate a youth network counseling center from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. It will provide consultation on participation methods and roles for youth wishing to join the network and encourage many young people to participate.

Anyone interested in youth-related agendas or networking can participate, and inquiries can be made to the Youth Policy Division of Gwanak-gu Office. After the education ends, the training videos will be available for viewing on the YouTube channel ‘Live Gwanak’ from December 7 to 9.

A district official said, “We hope that the Gwanak Youth Week event will be an opportunity for Gwanak’s youth to grow as proactive policy partners,” adding, “We will continue to promote policies together with youth and actively support young people pursuing their dreams.”

Gwanak Youth Week Starts... Nowon-gu Youth Job Center 'Cheongnyeon Naeil' Opens

Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) is opening the youth job center ‘Youth Tomorrow.’

Nowon-gu has about 140,000 young people aged 19 to 39, accounting for 27.5% of the total population. With seven universities located in the area, there has been high demand for youth employment information and support services. However, there is only one job caf? providing customized youth employment services in the northeastern area, making access difficult.

Therefore, the district opened the youth job center near Nowon Station, which is conveniently connected by subway lines 4 and 7. This is to quickly respond to youth employment needs and provide professional and comprehensive one-stop employment support services.

The youth job center ‘Youth Tomorrow,’ located in the KB Bank building in front of Exit 6 of Nowon Station on subway line 7, was established right next to the 9th-floor Seoul Youth Center ‘Nowon Orang’ to increase the efficiency of youth space utilization. The district expects that sharing space and operating interlinked programs will enable various approaches and support for youth.

The 150㎡ center consists of employment counseling rooms, interview clothing rental rooms, photo studios, and open study halls. It plans to operate customized programs for youth employment success, including ▲employment consulting ▲employment mentoring ▲employment competency training ▲employment support services.

The first customized youth employment program is ‘job seeker-employer matching’ through employment consulting. Youth can receive comprehensive employment counseling from on-site career counselors. Career personality type and job preference tests, basic counseling for job seekers, job registration, and customized job matching counseling are conducted face-to-face or through various media. Additionally, customized experts are matched for mock interviews and 1:1 or group consulting by employment field and job type.

The second is employment mentoring. Once or twice a month, youth mentors currently working in the field explore interested jobs and provide opportunities for indirect experience.

The third is employment competency training, where youth can learn and experience knowledge and skills necessary for employment. In December, special lectures on speech, self-introduction letters, and online marketing are prepared.

The fourth is employment support services, including interview suit rental and a self-photo studio for employment photos. Interview suits can be rented urgently, by visit, or by delivery according to user needs. Anyone can take self-photos for resumes or prototypes, and every Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., professional photographers provide shooting and retouching support. Healing programs to motivate job seekers are also conducted.

Use of the center is available to youth aged 19 to 39 residing in or based in Nowon-gu preparing for employment or job change. Operating hours are Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and closed on Sundays.

Meanwhile, the district will establish a Youth Policy Division in 2023 to expand youth job policies. In addition to the existing region-led youth job project linking local companies and job-seeking youth, it plans to set up a Youth Future Fund to support youth life in areas such as start-ups, culture, education, and welfare.

Oh Seung-rok, mayor of Nowon-gu, said, “We will create a young city where youth can become healthy and independent by implementing various customized projects centered on the newly established Youth Policy Division next year.”
