Ecological Garden Planned Through Jungnangcheon Ecological Restoration and Greening Project
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The grassy plaza along the Jungnangcheon Stream in Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Ilhyung Lee) will be reborn as a vibrant garden filled with colorful tulips next spring.
Dongdaemun-gu, which is promoting the Flower City Development Project, is creating a year-round flower complex under Jangpyeonggyo Bridge on Jungnangcheon Stream to maximize the project's impact.
The development area covers 1,500㎡, where flowers suitable for each season, such as zinnias and cosmos, will be planted to make it a local attraction.
To this end, the district planted 28 varieties of tulip bulbs in various colors along a 500m stretch of the Jungnangcheon walking trail to create the flower complex. The planted tulip bulbs will be carefully managed through winter to bloom fully next spring, marking the start of the year-round flower complex project. In summer, zinnias will be planted, and in autumn, yellow cosmos, allowing visitors to enjoy a vibrant flower garden until November.
A district official explained that since there is a risk of budget waste on indirect construction costs when proceeding through a construction contract, they saved costs by directly purchasing tulip bulbs and only paying for construction expenses. Going forward, the flower complex will be developed by sowing flower seeds to cultivate a sustainable year-round flower garden, reducing costs and gaining residents' support.
Additionally, the district is creating an ecological garden through the Jungnangcheon ecological restoration and greening project. On the 10th, rose bulbs were planted under Jangangyo Bridge (photo), filling the garden with seven varieties of four-season roses such as ‘Grande Classe,’ ‘Dame de Coeur,’ and ‘Pink Perfume,’ two types of shrubs including crape myrtle, and three types of herbaceous plants like lilies and variegated silver grass. The ecological garden project is expected to be completed within the year.
Mayor Ilhyung Lee of Dongdaemun-gu, who personally participated in planting rose and tulip bulbs, said, “We are considering various measures to create a Flower City. We aim to increase resident usage by creating a large-scale flower garden on the Jungnangcheon grassy plaza and establish a landmark that harmonizes with cherry blossoms and roses. Please look forward to the tulips blooming along Jungnangcheon next spring.”
On the 15th, the district held a Flower City Development Project briefing session, attended by Mayor Ilhyung Lee, external experts, advisory groups, and other stakeholders, where the basic planning service commencement report and advisory meeting were conducted.
