[Asia Economy Reporter Minji Lee] Indonesia has expressed its intention to host the 2036 Summer Olympics and hopes to hold the event in the newly constructed new capital, Nusantara.

According to Antara News and others on the 17th, Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated at a press conference during the G20 summit held in Bali the previous day, "I officially express the intention to host the 2036 Olympics in the new capital on this occasion." The host city for the 2036 Olympics has not yet been decided, and the selection timeline is also undecided.

If Indonesia hosts the Olympics, it will become the first Southeast Asian country to do so. Indonesia previously hosted the 18th Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games in 2018.

However, fierce competition is expected as various countries, including South Korea, India, China, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Qatar, Spain, Russia, Turkey, and Egypt, have expressed interest in hosting.

In particular, since Nusantara is a city that has only just begun construction, it is uncertain whether the Olympic infrastructure can be adequately prepared for the event 14 years from now.

Meanwhile, the Summer Olympics are scheduled to be held in Paris, France in 2024, Los Angeles (LA), USA in 2028, and Brisbane, Australia in 2032, respectively.
