[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Major foreign media reported on the 16th (local time) that France and Spain have moved up the phase-out date for internal combustion engine vehicle sales from 2040 to 2035, advancing it by five years.
France and Spain pledged to accelerate the eco-friendly transition by newly joining the Zero Emission Vehicles Declaration (ZEVD) at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) currently underway in Egypt.
ZEVD was agreed upon at COP26 held in Glasgow, UK, last year, aiming for global sales of zero-emission eco-friendly vehicles by 2040. For developed countries, the goal is 100% sales of eco-friendly vehicles by 2035.
The UK government announced that companies such as Delta Electronics, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, and automotive parts manufacturer Valeo have also newly signed the ZEVD.
Accordingly, the number of countries and companies joining ZEVD increased from 130 last year to 214 this year.
According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (NEF), the sales ratio of eco-friendly vehicles, including electric vehicles, reached 13.2% in the first half of this year.
