Won Hee-ryong Requests Indonesian Government to "Actively Support Korean Companies"
On the 14th, Won Hee-ryong, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, visited Bali, Indonesia, where he signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the development cooperation of Jakarta MRT Phase 4 and discussed the pilot project for public official housing in the new capital, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 15th.
Minister Won met with the Indonesian Minister of Transportation, the Minister of the New Capital Authority, and the Acting Governor of Jakarta, requesting the Indonesian government's interest to actively involve Korean companies in the Jakarta railway and new capital projects.
This visit to Indonesia was made possible as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport signed the 'Jakarta MRT Phase 4 Development Cooperation MOU' with the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation and Jakarta city in conjunction with the G20 summit.
The MOU is an advancement based on discussions between Minister Won and Budi Karya Sumadi, Indonesian Minister of Transportation, during his visit to Korea in June this year, and was concluded together with Jakarta, the project implementer.
The Ministry explained, "The significance lies in increasing the possibility of domestic companies participating in the MRT project, which has mainly involved Japan until now."
Minister Won emphasized that domestic companies successfully participated in the system and vehicle sectors of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Phase 1 project in 2019, which is currently in operation, and requested active support from the Minister of Transportation so that the Korea Rail Network Authority and others can participate in Jakarta LRT Phases 2 and 3 as well as the Bali LRT project.
He also highlighted to Heru Budi Hartono, Acting Governor of Jakarta, that Korea's abundant experience in metro construction and operation would be beneficial for the Jakarta MRT Phase 4 and LRT Phases 2 and 3 projects, assuring that the Korean government would not spare necessary support.
Minister Budi of Transportation responded by expressing a desire to continue cooperation with Korea through the signing of this MRT Phase 4 MOU.
Minister Won met with Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Public Works and Housing, and Bambang Susantono, Minister of the New Capital Authority, who are promoting the Indonesian new capital project, to discuss concrete cooperation plans so that the Korean government and companies can play various roles in the development of the new capital.
Regarding the recent issuance of a negotiation commencement approval letter to Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) by the Indonesian government to promote the pilot project for public official housing in the new capital as a public-private partnership, Minister Won stated, "If Korean companies and LH, which have abundant experience in administrative capital relocation and housing projects, participate, Indonesian public officials relocating to the new capital will be able to settle early and stably."
Meanwhile, on the same day, Minister Won held meetings with Shin Jae-won, President of Hyundai Motor Company's Urban Air Mobility Division, and Kim Young-seop, President of LG CNS, who participated in the B20 event, stating, "It is necessary to proactively pioneer the future transportation industry and smart city markets overseas," and added, "The government will not spare support such as regulatory improvements."
Minister Won added, "The government will actively support to increase the possibility of winning orders and enhance the competitiveness of our companies, while raising trust and cooperation between the two countries to a higher level through continuous exchanges with Indonesian ministers in charge of infrastructure."
