[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) and the Saemaul Undong Dongdaemun-gu Branch took the initiative on the morning of the 9th to clean up the environment of Jungnangcheon Stream.

This activity is particularly meaningful as it marks the first time in three years that all members of the Saemaul Undong Dongdaemun-gu Branch gathered to actively preserve the environment of Jungnangcheon, the central stream of the district, after large-scale group activities were restricted due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

On the 9th, Mayor Lee Pil-hyung of Dongdaemun-gu and about 100 members of the Saemaul Undong Dongdaemun-gu Branch collected floating debris and trash along Jungnangcheon accumulated from last summer’s typhoons and monsoon rains. A large-scale cleanup was conducted around Jungnangcheon’s No. 1 Sports Park area, a 3 km walking trail, and inside the stream itself, collecting approximately one ton of waste including plastic bags, discarded wood, cigarette butts, and disposable plastic cups.

Mayor Lee and the Saemaul Undong Dongdaemun-gu Branch members also threw EM soil balls made by the members themselves into the stream to purify the water. EM (Effective Micro-organisms) contains over 80 species of microorganisms such as yeast, lactic acid bacteria, and nuruk mold used in food fermentation, which are known to enhance the stream’s self-purification ability and effectively remove odors.

Additionally, to boost the morale of the Saemaul Undong Dongdaemun-gu Branch members, the district awarded commendations from the Dongdaemun-gu Office to three Saemaul leaders who contributed to creating a bright and healthy Dongdaemun-gu through active volunteer work based on the Saemaul spirit of diligence, self-help, and cooperation.

Mayor Lee Pil-hyung of Dongdaemun-gu expressed, “Jungnangcheon is as vital as oxygen to our residents, and I deeply thank the Saemaul Undong Dongdaemun-gu Branch for leading the efforts to create a living, breathing Jungnangcheon. We will also support the Saemaul Undong Dongdaemun-gu Branch, who are dedicated to practicing love for nature through campaigns such as the carbon-neutral zero campaign and Baebongsan cleanup activities, and Dongdaemun-gu will cooperate together.”
