[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kim Yi-gang) announced on the 9th that it held a winter natural disaster and drought countermeasure briefing session.
The briefing session, attended by 12 disaster cooperation departments and related organizations including officials from the city waterworks headquarters, was held to check the progress of each sector ahead of the full-scale winter natural disaster countermeasure period and to establish a cooperation system between departments.
During the meeting, discussions were held on proactively operating the local disaster safety headquarters when special warnings such as heavy snow and cold waves are issued, rapid and accurate situation management using the disaster management system, real-time disaster information delivery through the operation of the disaster early warning system, and strengthening the management of snow-vulnerable structures.
To ensure rapid snow removal on 41.77 km of major arterial roads in the district, snow removal equipment was inspected and snow removal materials secured. Additionally, about 2,600 personnel, including all Seo-gu office employees and members of local self-governing organizations, will be deployed to 106 vulnerable locations such as side roads and slopes to prepare for snow removal situations.
Furthermore, to minimize inconvenience to residents, heated chairs as cold wave reduction facilities will be installed and 276 cold wave shelters designated.
Considering that the precipitation in Gwangju Metropolitan City is only about 50% of the average, Seo-gu anticipated damage due to a shortage of domestic water and discussed emergency water supply countermeasures.
Measures were also devised to proactively respond to drought through water-saving practices in apartment complexes and public awareness campaigns.
Seo-gu Mayor Kim Yi-gang said, “As the frequency and intensity of natural disasters increase due to climate change, we will thoroughly prepare in advance to protect the lives and property of residents and do our best to minimize their inconvenience.”
