Korean-American Family Points Out Rising Sun Flag in Smithsonian Museum's Magazine Site
Professor Seokyeongdeok: "Truly Remarkable... The Campaign to Eradicate the Rising Sun Flag Will Continue"
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] A Korean American family living near Texas, USA, succeeded in having a Rising Sun Flag video removed from the Smithsonian Museum's magazine site in Washington DC.
According to Professor Seo Kyung-deok of Sungshin Women's University on Instagram on the 9th, a Korean American elementary school student, A (9 years old), discovered the Rising Sun Flag while watching a video on the Smithsonian magazine site.
The video was about the history and science of domestic cats, explaining how cats have been domesticated as pets by humans. While explaining the case of Japan, the Rising Sun Flag appeared as the background behind the map of Japan. After seeing this, A sent a protest email to the Smithsonian, but the museum only replied briefly with "Thank you for your email" and did not modify the video.
A's mother posted on the Korean American community site on the 22nd of last month, appealing for support to remove the Rising Sun Flag video. Many Koreans and others sent protest emails to the Smithsonian. On the 8th, the Smithsonian sent emails to A and other protesters, saying "Thank you for sharing your opinions," and "The matter has been forwarded to the relevant personnel and the video has been modified." The video is now replaced with a photo of a cat.
Upon learning this news, Professor Seo said, "Nine-year-old A, his mother, and the Korean American community joined forces to remove the Rising Sun Flag from the video on the Smithsonian Museum magazine site," adding, "What a wonderful achievement. When I go on a business trip to Dallas, I will definitely treat this family to a meal." He further emphasized, "The global campaign to eradicate the Rising Sun Flag will continue until the day it disappears completely from the earth."
