[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-gyeong] Concerns have been raised that the reappointment evaluation criteria for faculty members at Jeonnam Provincial University, which is facing an existential crisis, need to be improved.
Jeonnam Provincial Council Planning and Administration Committee Vice Chairman Jeon Gyeong-seon (Democratic Party·Mokpo 5) stated on the 9th during the administrative audit of Jeonnam Provincial University, “Even if a department is abolished due to poor academic management, faculty members are reappointed as long as they score over 70 points in the faculty evaluation. While tenured full professors cannot be helped, associate professors and assistant professors should be strictly evaluated on their academic management abilities during reappointment reviews.”
Vice Chairman Jeon added, “At Jeonnam Provincial University, the proportion of full professors is 85.4%, and among full-time faculty members aged 50 and above, it is 92.7% (38 out of 41),” emphasizing, “Innovation begins with personnel renewal. A thorough mid- to long-term workforce supply plan should be established to revitalize the organization.”
He continued, “According to the faculty personnel management regulations of Jeonnam Provincial University, faculty members who score 70 points or higher in performance evaluations are reappointed. So far, no faculty member has failed the reappointment review and been denied appointment,” he pointed out.
In response, President Park Byeong-ho said, “We will promote the establishment of regulations so that reappointment decisions reflect admission rates, enrollment rates, and employment rates,” and added, “We will also discuss with the council the direction for revising the reappointment policies and regulations for full-time faculty members.”
