Daegu Online School Established in September 2023 ... "High School Students Take Desired Subjects" Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-seon] The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education is establishing the (tentatively named) "Daegu Online School," aiming to open in September 2023.

In September, the Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education was selected by the Ministry of Education as one of the pilot online school operating education offices, along with the Incheon, Gwangju, and Gyeongnam Offices of Education.

"Daegu Online School" is a new type of school that has classrooms and teachers but no enrolled students, offering part-time classes. It provides various courses so that high school students can take subjects according to their career paths and aptitudes.

Students can take desired subjects that are difficult to offer at their home schools through the online school, and individual schools can also request the online school to open joint curriculum courses to operate new subjects.

"Daegu Online School" will be established by remodeling the dormitory within Dalseong High School, consisting of a total of 21 rooms over 3 floors. It will serve 2nd and 3rd-year high school students in the region, with up to 15 students per course, offering a total of 50 courses and accommodating 750 students.

The classes will primarily be conducted through real-time interactive remote learning, with face-to-face classes possible after school and during vacations depending on the characteristics of the subjects.

In particular, from the establishment stage, the school emphasizes innovative online-based classes suited to the characteristics of subjects, including virtual space utilization classes, flipped learning, discussions, and project-based classes, leading changes in school education focused on "class-centered" learning.

The Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education plans to accelerate the establishment process by forming a preparatory TF team starting in December, preparing a standard set of online school regulations related to course registration and subject offerings, and selecting the school name.

Superintendent Kang Eun-hee stated, "The Daegu-type high school credit system allows all students to choose subjects according to their aptitudes and career paths independently, emphasizing the substance of curriculum-based classes and evaluations above all. We expect that Daegu Online School will greatly help reduce the burden of subject offerings at schools and stabilize the high school credit system ahead of its full implementation in 2025."
