Seoul City Conducts Survey on '2030 Zero Plastic Seoul' Theme to Boost Citizen Participation

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 9th that it will conduct a survey under the theme of ‘2030 Zero Plastic Seoul’ to activate citizen participation in resource circulation policies amid its multifaceted efforts to promote resource circulation of waste.

Any Seoul citizen can propose ideas to create a zero plastic Seoul by 2030 on ‘Democracy Seoul’ and ‘Seoul Asks’ until the 21st. Among the participants, a total of 200 people will be selected by lottery to receive a cultural gift certificate worth 10,000 won (one per person), and the results will be announced on the Seoul city website on Tuesday, November 29.

This survey was prepared to empathize with citizens’ concerns about the increasing trend of household waste, especially the rise in plastic use due to the spread of non-face-to-face consumption, and to collect various citizen opinions on plastic reduction measures by different stakeholders.

The valuable opinions gathered through the survey will be used as discussion topics at the ‘Life Without Waste - 2030 Zero Plastic Seoul Citizen Forum (tentative name)’ scheduled to be held on the 29th, and will be reflected in the establishment of Seoul’s resource circulation policies through multifaceted and in-depth discussions in the future.

Meanwhile, to solve the problem of increasing household waste, Seoul is promoting the ‘Zero Waste Seoul Project,’ which minimizes household waste in cooperation with cafes, restaurants, markets, universities, and others throughout Seoul.

Yoon Jae-sam, Director of the Resource Recovery Facility Promotion Team, said, “To reduce waste such as plastic, a comprehensive transition at all stages from production to disposal is necessary,” and added, “I hope this survey will become a public forum for various social stakeholders to innovate toward a circular economy.”
