Gwangju Seo-gu Takes Active Steps Toward Zero Single-Use Products

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim I-gang) has taken the lead in achieving zero single-use products.

On the morning of the 8th, at an executive meeting, Seo-gu Mayor Kim I-gang said, “The government plans to further strengthen regulations on single-use products starting from the 24th of the 11th month,” and urged, “Please actively refrain from using single-use products starting from the district office.”

The mayor emphasized, “In Seo-gu, public officials should take the lead in refraining from using single-use products so that using them would actually feel inconvenient. Small practices become habits and culture, which can lead to great changes in the world.”

Seo-gu is also promoting special events to expand participation in the ‘Making Seo-gu Zero Single-Use Products’ campaign.

Residents and public officials of Seo-gu who post their own know-how on not using single-use products on SNS by the 30th will be entered into a draw to receive prizes.

Additionally, the district plans to induce zero use of single-use products by installing personal cup automatic washers and shared cup sterilizers within the office.

A pilot project supporting the reuse of multi-use cups, including support for multi-use cup provision, washing, and delivery, will also be conducted targeting cafes near the district office.

Meanwhile, the government plans to expand the list of restricted items starting from the 24th, including single-use paper cups, plastic straws, and stirring sticks, and strengthen regulations by changing single-use bags, shopping bags, and cheering items from free provision bans to usage bans.

Accordingly, Seo-gu established a plan to restrict single-use product use in public institutions in April and has been making efforts to reduce single-use products.
