[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Concerns have been raised that Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, acquiring Twitter could negatively impact global public opinion formation.

The American political and diplomatic magazine The Atlantic mentioned in a commentary on the 7th that Musk's personal tendencies could significantly influence global information sharing and public opinion formation. The Atlantic first compared Twitter to an international metropolis overflowing with knowledge, culture, and full of fascinating characters.

The magazine stated, "This city (Twitter) has never had good public safety, and effective law enforcement might be impossible," adding, "This matter (Musk's acquisition of Twitter) is like Oswald Cobblepot (Penguin Man) becoming the mayor of Gotham City."

Gotham City is a fictional city from the Batman movies, known for rampant violent crimes amid poor public safety.

Regarding the incident on the 28th of last month, when Nancy Pelosi, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, had her residence breached, Musk linked a conspiracy theory raised by the media outlet 'Santa Monica Observer' in a tweet on the 30th of the same month, but deleted it after controversy arose. The Atlantic emphasized Musk's irresponsibility, noting that Musk has over 100 million Twitter followers.

The magazine described, "Twitter is a key messenger of the latest information and urgent news, and a communication channel that continuously delivers news from distant, unseen places," citing examples such as the Iran protests, the Ukraine war, China's economic slowdown, and Africa's food crisis.

It further argued that if Twitter is misused, its dangerous aspects such as populism and the spread of misinformation could be highlighted.

Recently, the United Nations also unusually expressed concerns about Musk's acquisition of Twitter through an open letter, urging human rights-centered management.
